Kansai International Airport Terminal 1 Building Renovation New Domestic Flight Area Opens!
The first large-scale renovation of the "New Domestic Flight Area" opened at Kansai International Airport in October 2022, ahead of international area.
In the new domestic flight area, the commercial area after security check has been greatly expanded to include a total of six stores with a rich Kansai flavor (four food and beverage stores and two merchandise stores) and a new domestic flight lounge for use by eligible passengers.
Under the concepts of "expansion of international flight capacity," "enhancement of airside area," and "improvement of passenger experience," the airport's appeal will be greatly enhanced by expanding international flight capacity as well as commercial and dining zones. The construction work will be carried out in four phases. Phase 1 is to develop the new domestic flight area, and Phase 2 is to renovate the old domestic flight area into the new international flight departure area.
In the new domestic flight area, the two departure gates currently located on the north and south sides will be consolidated into one on the south side of the second floor, and six "smart lanes" will be installed at the security checkpoint to allow multiple passengers to use the inspection lanes simultaneously. The arrival gate, currently located on the 2nd floor, will be moved to the south side of the 1st floor. The area of the commercial area was previously 230 square meters, but has been expanded approximately five times to 1,130 square meters.
Of the new commercial area, the "general area" before security checkpoints will have a total of seven stores, including six food and beverage stores and one merchandise store. The "restricted area" after the security inspection will have a total of 6 stores: 4 food & beverage stores and 2 merchandising stores. By expanding the commercial area after security check, KAP aims to encourage passengers to pass through the security checkpoint earlier, similar to Itami Airport, which was renovated in August 2020 and is operated by KAP.
The six restaurants in the restricted area include Botejyu, an Osaka okonomiyaki restaurant; Tempura Endo, a tempura specialty restaurant headquartered in Gion, Kyoto; Kansai Tabi Nikki, which sells Osaka souvenirs; and others with a rich Kansai flavor.
In the new domestic flight area, six smart lanes with automatically moving baggage trays have been installed at security checkpoints to facilitate inspection. The commercial area beyond the security checkpoint has been expanded from 230 square meters to 1,110 square meters, and transformed into a space where passengers can enjoy leisurely shopping and other activities until boarding.
The new area features a wide range of stores, including a souvenir store that offers products in three booths, each with a different theme, such as luxury or regional, a café with a full lineup of alcoholic beverages, and an okonomiyaki restaurant that offers more than 30 kinds of local delicacies from all over Japan in addition to its regular menu.
The renovation work is being carried out in four phases, with the domestic flight area being the first phase. The final goal is to expand the capacity to accept international flights.
The domestic area was opened by consolidating the two departure gates in the center of the terminal and relocating them to the south side. The vacant space was converted into boarding gates for international flights, increasing the number of available boarding gates for international flights by five to 39.
The Kansai Airport Domestic Departure Level is located on the 2nd floor.
The security checkpoint is on the right side of the airport.
