Airport Trivia: Skyscrapers are not supposed to be built around Japanese airports.

Height restrictions around airports are one of the reasons why it is difficult to build skyscrapers in Japan like those overseas.

When you look at the ground from the ground of a plane on landing, you will notice that there are no tall buildings around the airport in Japan.

Terminal buildings are at most five or six stories high and are not designed to be that tall.

The control tower is the only tall building that stands out in Japanese airports.

This is because Japan's Civil Aeronautics Law restricts the height of buildings around airports, and no building over 45 meters high can be built within a 4-kilometer radius from the center of the runway.

Furthermore, various restrictions also exist on the extension of the runway where airplanes take off and land.

In addition, there are even regulations that even at a distance, for example, within a 24-kilometer radius of the runway, buildings can be up to 295 meters in height.

The reason for this is, of course, to eliminate obstructions in the vicinity of the airport so that airplanes can take off and land safely.

Tall buildings can obstruct the pilot's view and, in some cases, contribute to changing wind directions.

This height restriction at Japanese airports is not limited to airport perimeters.

For example, the height restrictions at Haneda Airport affect central Tokyo and even Yokohama.

The restrictions at Osaka's Itami Airport also include central Osaka.

These height restrictions are one of the reasons why skyscrapers are not built in Japan's major cities as they are in other countries.
