Kansai International Airport Terminal 1 Building Renovation Underway, as of March 2022

Kansai International Airport is currently undergoing a large-scale renovation of the Terminal 1 building.

I used Kansai International Airport in March 2022, many stores were closed and renovation work was underway.

Kansai Airport, the operator of Kansai International Airport, is currently undergoing a major renovation project to increase the airport's overall capacity to handle international passengers from the current 30 million to 40 million per year by the spring of 2025, when the Osaka Expo is scheduled to open.

Specifically, the following measures will be implemented: promotion of fast travel, review of international/domestic flight area layout, review of landside/airside ratio, centralization of international facilities, seismic reinforcement of ceilings, escalators, etc., and enhancement of commercial areas.

In particular, the 3rd floor will undergo the most significant changes in this renovation. The area currently occupied by food and beverage points and stores will be eliminated and replaced by an immigration area and an international lounge.

The center of T1, where domestic flights are currently located, will be turned into an international departure area with a walk-through duty free store. The area after departure will be increased by 60% compared to the previous area.

International departure counter, but currently few international flights are in operation due to entry restrictions to prevent the spread of Covid-19. The counter is also unlit.

This is the elevator near the center of the terminal building, where workers are setting up scaffolding. The elevator may be removed as well.

Temporary fencing has been set up here and there throughout the airport, and construction workers are working.

The store is not open for business either. It will be difficult to spend a pleasant time at the airport until the renovation work is completed.
